this is stunning, I have never seen a Merit Cross for Women before other then in books.

There where only 2992 of these awarded right???

Thanks James, Available references do indicate that a total of 2,992 Merit Crosses for Ladies and Young Ladies (Verdienst Kreuz fur Frauen und Jungfrauen) were awarded in 1871. Photographs do not do these awards justice as they are exceptionally high quality. The center is glasslike enamel and the silver inlays on the reverse are very intricate.

Prepare yourself for a shock, James.

I've come to the conclusion the center is truly glass. Mine is chipped and flaked on the 9 o'clock reverse arm in a way capable only of glass.

The Verdienst Kreuz fur Frauen und Jungfrauen is one of my favorites. Now there are only 2,989 to be accounted for (excluding Clara Barton's).
