In looking at some officer leather mortarboards, sometimes there seems to be a slight ridge running from the 4 corners down to the base of the neck where it attaches to the helmet dome.

Were some of them reinforced with willow pieces at the corners?

Looking inside with a dental mirror, one mortarboard seems to be made with four pieces of leather; each joint is covered with a thin strip of leather---it resembles the interior of a cloth parade rabatte.

The exterior of the joints looks like it's been covered with some sort of putty, as do the tiny stitching holes where the neck attaches to the helmet dome.
