Hello,

I need help with a EM Tschapka restoration please. There's a wartime em's tschapka for sale with brass fittings, but needs everything else. I've got an EM's tschako eagle (I believe guards'), but its is metal colored and not brass. Would they work together?

Thank you,

Lurch

So a wartime date, but the M91 lugs on the side are brass? That would make it an M91/95 pattern. http://www.kaisersbunker.com/pt/tschako.htm

Lutch, there is no such thing as a "Garde Tschako eagle". The Garde on the Tschako, wore a Garde star in nickel-silver. The only units that wore a 95mm silver eagle Wappen on a Tschako, were the Preußen Telegraphen Battalions 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6; and Preußen Luftschiffer-Bataillons 3, 4, and 5. Will a magnet stick to your silver eagle? And the biggest problem, is finding something to fit the holes on the front.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. Sorry I goofed. Its a tschapka question and not tschako.

There is a wartime tschapka body for sale (with brass fittings & trim) and I have a metal colored eagle and the parts to complete a restoration. The eagle is magnetic.

Will the metal colored eagle work correctly with a wartime EM's tschapka with brass fittings & trim?

I thank you again,

Lurch

If the Tschapka body has brass fittings & trim, then it needs a brass Wappen. I would think carefully about this, you could spend years looking for a correct Garde eagle Wappen in gilt for Tschapka and never find one.

If your silver eagle is magnetic, what you actually have is a steel M15 one that the grey has been stripped from. A true nickel-silver pre-1915 eagle Wappen is not magnetic.

I would like to echo Tony's comments on buying this piece. This is a lesson I had to learn. I bought 2 tschapkas one an M15 with missing top and split front visor. The other is an M95 with brass fittings with front viosr detatched and missing the liner. I bought these close to 10 yrs ago thnking that I could find the missing pieces or perform a restoration. Frankly, forget it! The whole thing was a waste of time and money. It is well worth spending the extra money on a complete tschapka rather than fooling yourself into thinking that you can save money and find the missing bits or make a liner. Brian

Well said Brian. This should be repeated again and again. Only buy the best. You'll never regret it. Bruno
