An old seller, but somebody fell for it....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/WW1-GERMAN-PICKELHAUBE-Complete-NICE-ORIGINAL-/380483864892?pt=UK_Collectables_Militaria_LE&hash=item58969b093c" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Sad for the bidder. #-o :( Or maybe the seller is baiting the trap? No bidder ID.

Well, simply speaking, the spike is the wrong shape if you look at it, the lower part is too short and it's too fat near the top, so it looks 'pregnant'. The best thing to do is look at the originals around here and develop a critical eye.
There are a lot of nice replicas out there that are pretty close to the originals, and others (like this one) that are quite easy to spot. All in all, I don't think anybody here has a problem with replicas. It's when replicas are sold as originals, as this one is, that they become 'fakes' and are a problem for not only collectors, but the purchasers as well; if they think they're getting an original. You can imagine some poor soul taking his or her prize helmet to a show to sell it for a profit, or get some good feedback and have sellers and collectors tell them they've bought a worthless fake. Not good.

The spike is indeed an ugly fake but there is something worse than that: this eagle plate "Peninsula Waterloo Gohrde" was only worn by artillery regiments (FAR10 and FAR46), of which helmets wore a ball, not a spike...
