Pickelhaube amateur - restoration tips please!

Hi everyone,
First, the story...
My wife's great-grandfather was a stretcher-bearer in the Australian army and served in Europe during WWI. He brought home a Pickelhaube as a souvenir, which appears to have traversed a number of relatives over the years, and most recently my brother-in-law, who rediscovered it when cleaning out some old things a couple of months ago. My mother-in-law would like to see it restored to some of its former glory, so I have decided to take the project on as I have an interest in military history coming from a military family and having been in the army myself. Until a couple of weeks ago, all anyone knew was that it was "a Prussian helmet brought home from the war", but since I collected it yesterday to commence the project, I have been doing a bit of research and can see why this is more than just a hobby for some of you! :)

Second, the description - and some questions!
The Pickelhaube in question has definitely seen better days - I'm not sure how to post photos on here yet, but will try to put some up. From Kaiser's Bunker, I have identified it as an M1895/97. It is missing the chinstrap, two studs for the spike, the cockades and the waffen (all in brass), as well as the internal plate (not sure of its name) to secure the spike studs. I would like to return it to a simple Prussian enlisted man's helmet, so can anyone please validate the following?
1. Cockades - I assume I will need a 70mm M91 Reichs-Kokarde in red-white-black on the right side and a 70mm M91 Prussian black-white one on the right?
2. Waffen - This is the one I am most confused about - can someone please post a picture of the Waffen an enlisted Prussian soldier would have on his helmet?
3. Chinstrap - I assume they are black and the buckles and loops match the other brass components?

And a final question - can anyone point me to any discussions about reshaping/reforming as the helmet is quite buckled and this will hopefully be my first step in the restoration process.

Appreciate any help that you can give!

Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum!

There are several people who restore helmets here and I'm sure they'll offer some advice. Now, some questions for you without the photos yet:

1) Do you know this is Prussian? Are there any markings on the neck guard or elsewhere? It may be that getting a Prussian line eagle will be a waste of money for you, if it's say, Bavarian.

If you're talking a line infantry enlisted helmet, here's one from Tony's site, which shows all of the right things: Not polished to an absurdly bright shine, look at the beautiful patina on the 'furniture' (Brass). Makes me drool just to look at it! ... even though I've three of my own!....

On the underside of the neckguard, I tried removing some of the dust to see if I could locate a stamp or any markings, but to no avail. :( Under the front visor, there appears to be some black markings, but I'm not sure if this is just the discolouring of the leather. The only markings I could find were under the liner on the inside of the helmet shell - in faded handwriting on one side, it says "Jungen" (or could be "Junger") and on the opposite side, it says "K. Jungen" (or "K. Junger").

On the restoration/preservation side, can anyone recommend what I can use on the underside of the leather to nourish it? When I was inspecting the neckguard for distinguishing marks, I found the leather to be very dry and starting to develop cracks.

Ok - here goes with uploading some photos...

Thanks to Gustaf for the tutorial!

I've managed to get some time to search the topics for restoration information - very informative and some excellent discussions!

A couple more questions (if I may...):
1. Reshaping/Reforming - as per this link on the subject: http://www.pickelhaubes.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=513&hilit=reforming
Regarding spikeymikey's "goretex method" of reshaping:
(a) How much goretex would one need to do this - I assume enough to fit around the whole skull interior (with the mention of a goretex hood!)?
(b) Is it possible to locate goretex offcuts or do you just buy a goretex hood or hat for the purpose!?
(c) In the absence of available goretex, is there any alternate material that might be used?

2. Refinishing - as per this link on the subject: http://www.pickelhaubes.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1664&hilit=restoring+finish
(a) Regarding Brian's method of using sandpaper and shellac thinner - from the photos I have posted, do you think this would work on the helmet I have?
(b) On shellac thinner, can someone please confirm or otherwise my findings: shellac thinner = denatured alcohol = methylated spirits ?

Once again, any help greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum and you did the right thing to join :D

Missing parts are offered from time to time on ebay (ebay.fr, ebay.de and ebay.com). Furthermore, authentic parts are also offered by specialized militaria dealers, such as:
