Picklehaube helmet fake???

Brian is correct on filling this in.
I, personally always use wine glasses for this.
They are, if you find the correct lenght, great for this.
Keeps both visors clean and sitting free from any surface beneath the helmet.
No load on the visors keeps the helmet free from any damage on the stitching.
I always use wine glasses, because they are almost unvisible under the helmets.

Do not clean it, you should just wipe the dust off it.
Cleaning it, with other things will result in the helmet getting damaged. Be carefull with these old helmets, they are more than a 100 years old.
Leave it as it is. Careful wiping the dust off will do. Anything else will damage the stitching of front, and rear visors. The stitching on those was done with very old cotton. Be very carefull with it. And if you do wipe the dust off it, leave the plate on. The Ghost behind it, will only tell that it is a legitimate helmet. Be carefull when cleaning it!

Thank you!

I've come to the conclusion that there are so many small sizes around, because the bigger sizes were all used. The small one were left over. Also don't forget these were worn a little higher on the head than we wear hats now.

Plus, leather does tend to shrink over the years, which is a reason why visor leather tends to pull away from the trim and the rear spine often shows a gap between itself and the leather shell.

I didn’t think about the leather shrinking - that makes a lot of sense!

For the type you need for your haubes chinstrap, here is one for sale on ebay-us I just found.
So you know what to look for. Metal fittings, steel not brass, and leather strap.

No, that one has the small hole in the center, it will not fit the M15 you have. This is one for an older style helmet.
Check this section of our forum, the ones posted the first, are the ones you need for it.
You can see, they have the larger holes to fit the M91 posts, also known as Knopf91.

Greetings, Coert.

Your helmet is a model 1915 but the side posts were introduced to pickelhauben in 1891, so thus the M91 comment from coert. Prior to 1891 the Germans used a bolt like fitting to fasten the chinstrap and cockades to the helmet. Consequently, the older cockades for the bolt system have a small hole while your helmet from 1915 has the side posts and needs the bigger hole cockade to fit over them. I think it is time to post a couple of pics so you can see what you need and to clarify things. I will try and do so tomorrow and post them.

Loree, thank you. Covert did post pics a few days ago. I’m just a bit slow at this as it is my first purchase and it’s a lot to learn. But also very interesting, and I’m enjoying the vast knowledge on this forum!
