Places NOT to miss?

Hi All,

We're off to Europe this summer. We'll be spending time in Munich (Munchen), Prague, Berlin and Hamburg. Any museums / stores I should look at that aren't normally on the 'tourist' information sties? This time, it'll be a 'looking around' trip, no purchases (after the helmets I've bought lately!), but looking is still fun!

There are several places in Prague including the Military Museum, Prague Castle (which has its own military museum in the Powder Tower), and the Church of Cyril and Methodius, where the Czech assassins of Heydrich took refuge. I wrote about the sites for Armchair General:

And I offered a photo tour of the museum:

Ron, the Hermann Historica auction house in is Munich! I would coincide my stay there with one of their auctions if I were you...

I have been to both of these museums, both excellent!

This one may be out of the way for you but it is very worth it if you find yourself in the Rheinland area...

Rastatt is only a couple of hours from Munich on a train-

The German Historical Museum in Berlin has a nice collection too-

I've not been to the new Dresden military museum, but it's only a couple of hours from Berlin and trains in Germany are really good (not too pricey, comfortable, fast, nice views)-

The Bavarian Army Museum as WP said it great too and just outside of Munich.

Have a great trip!

Here is my vote and your wife will probably enjoy this too.
Andechs Monastery
The Benedictine monastery Andechs is a famous place of pilgrimage on a hill about two miles east of the Ammersee in Upper Bavaria. Its site was originally occupied by a castle belonging to the counts of Diessen and probably of Roman origin. Its fame as a place of pilgrimage dates back to 955, when the relics which St. Rasso, one of the counts of Diessen, had brought from Rome and the Orient to his monastery at Wörth (later called Grafath) were transferred hither to save them from the ravages of the Huns.
In the twelfth century three Sacred Hosts, two of which are reputed to have been consecrated by Pope Gregory I the other by Pope Leo IX, were added to the relics of Andechs, which henceforth became popularly known as "Der heilige Berg". The earliest mention of these Hosts is found in a thirteenth-century missal of Andechs, now preserved at the state library of Munich. The collegiate church which Duke Ernest had erected in 1438 was changed into a Benedictine monastery by Duke Albert III in 1455, and colonized with monks from Tegernsee. In 1458 it was raised to an abbey, and thenceforth enjoyed a period of uninterrupted prosperity until its secularization in 1803. It was re-established in 1850 as a Benedictine priory, affiliated to the Abbey of St. Boniface in Munich.

What that does not tell you is that this place brews the best beer I have ever tasted. And I am serious. And Lord knows I have consumed a few beers. This video has a long commercial however it gives you a nice view.

Thanks very much all! Notes being made, maps drawn... :) I'm certain we'll make it to the castle in Prague!!

Chris, we stopped at the Dresden Museum last time we were in Germany and it was still not in its new quarters (but is now and it should be IMPRESSIVE!), unless we have more time there (this time we'll be there between Wroclaw Poland and Berlin), I doubt I'll be able to see it... but even in its temporary quarters it was pretty nice with some very nice helmets and uniforms.

I see the Berlin museum is by the Berliner Dom, and we might make it there, but aren't going to spend much time in the city as we're off to Danzig. Also, our first priority for Berlin Museums is the Egyptian collection on the Museum Insel for my wife. :)
