Dear Friends,

My good friend, Poilu Rouge, entrusted me with one of his treasures of a chest he inherited from his Uncle.
As you probably will know, we are both not collectors, but always interested, as fate guides us to a beautiful relic of the Great War. We can not withstand the attraction of this object to know more about it.

I know that many of you, enthusiastic aficionado’s, are specialists in helmets of the period , be it “Pickelhaubes” or “Stahlhelme”, etc.
I have made some photograph’s of Poilu Rouge’s “Stahlhelm”. I ask you kindly to provide us with some information. We, as amateurs and enthusiastic front visitors, estimate in all modesty, that it is a 1917 model.
The inside had been removed by someone in the ninety years past, alas.
Could one of you provide us with the information: is it a real helmet, as seen from the photographs, or is it a fake? Is it a model 1917 or is it a some other model?
Any information you can give us, is very welcome, just for the fun and the shared passion for the époque. See the photo's under this message, please for more details.

Please help us, if you share our enthusiasm and if you dispose over a lot more knowledge on this object.

Also on behalf of a curious Poilu Rouge,
Thanks a lot,
Pierre Grande Guerre

P.S. There will follow another question about a German handwriting on a Kriegspostkarte .

Hello Pierre,
This is not a M1917 ar even a M1916, It has to be a M1918 as there are no posts for the chin strap, the M18 had the chin strap bail on the liner band. The black colour leads one to think it could be a Irish Vickers helmet, but the quality sees too good, and it lacks the mounting bracket for the badge. It is a large size due to the lack of a step on the side lugs, and the transition from the skirt to the visor seems more angular, my first thought was it could be a "square dip" helmet, but tis type of helmet should have M91 chin strap posts.

Thanks, Gustaf.

I am flabbergasted by your quick answer and so elaborately detailed!
Poilu Rouge and me are very happy with your fast answer.

May I use your answer, ofcourse with your nickname and pickelhaubes as a source for my topic on this helmet in my site the Western Front 1914-1918 WW1, http://groups.msn.com/TheWesternFrontWW1 ?

Thanks any way for your speedy work, Gustaf!

Hi Pierre,
You can use anything I have written, maybe some one else can correct me. I am still looking for a photo of a Square dip helmet, they were the first few thousand that were made for a assault trrops for the battle of Verdun.
Best wishes
Gus

It would be interesting to know if there is a stamped manufacturer mark on the inside of the skirt. If I had to guess, I would think not.

I made a contribution of the dagger forum some time ago, see :

http://daggers.infopop.cc/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/2583025185/m/6930093314

were I compared some of my German and Austrian helmets and a Vickers example.

You will also find a picture of a square dip helmet on that page.

It might be of interest.

I am more interested in size as it has a very tiny vent hole. Pierre if you lok around the lower front edges you should find the marks Chip Minx is looking for . they should be 2 letters followed by 2 numbers .The numbers you should be looking for are 66,68 or 70 .

Hi Johan,
I am unable to get the images to load from the dagger forum, does one need to be a member to see the images? Or is it my coal powered computer?
Gus

Hello Gus

Yes, one needs to login to see the images. You would need to do so to see the images of the square dip helmet.

To see my steel helmet pictures you can go to my web page address (it its a pdf and might take a while to load). It also contains a list of helmet manufacturers

Thanx, Zipperheads9. Next time at Poilu's house I will look closer at the lower edges.
And, Gustaf, indeed, I had the same problem, no picures to be seen JS's forum, alas. :(
Anyway, I am grateful for all the advise and help here. :)

Pierre

I have one of those Vickers helmets. A really interesting piece.

The helmet posted above looks a bit odd. Could it be a post-WWI helmet? It doesn't look like an RZM helmet but there were other organizations that used newly produced helmets I believe.

That is true. RZM helmets usually had an RZM logo stamped somewhere inside the shell. In addition, many post war organizations also bought helmets on the private market

Johan

Thanks Johan, I will have to set up an account and log on, I tried the link to your site, but I must not have waited long enough as I have a very slow connection (signals to my telephone still come by pony express some times)
Gus

:D Salut, Otto! Si tu peux regarder, je n'oublie jamais mes amis aux pays lointaines.

Et Piaf n'avait pas raison. Moi, je ne quite pas les Pickelhaubes.Com, jamais!

I was offered one of the Irish helmets in White a couple of years ago ,I just sold the fellow a control ring from an early WW2 Commwnwealth Fighter for a cheap price 75cdn. so he offered me the Irish helmet for the same. I knew not what I looked at ,it was thin and the edge was detaching so I said no. What are they worth?
Mark :) .

OOh bad move Mark,
They are worth $4000 to $6000 now, they are very rare.
Gus
PS I am just jerking your chain, I have no idea as the the value of the Vickers helmets, The ones with the white paint are the most common, but even they are not that common, if they were German they would command a high price, but as yet there is not that much demand for the Irish helmets, but I will bet that when the centenial of the Irish independance comes around, they will be in great demand.
