Proof that they weren't always valued.

I went to a tractor and steam show today and searched the flea market for a WWII gas can bracket (you know, as on a Jeep). Didn't find any, but I did find this for $34. A bisected French fireman's (?) helmet. This is the 2nd old French helmet I found like this (the first was a Chausseur's, which I silver soldered back together). Proof that at one time restaurant decorations were more important than the history of the helmet.

Wow Ron.

You Americans know how to party....
Yeah, If they can make a buck (dollar).... When I was a kid, I told an old relative that I wanted a 'spiked helmet'. His reply? "You know those are garbage. They call them junker helmets." My relatives were full of all kinds of 'good' advice.

I am correct in thinking this was a fireman's helmet, right? It seems to me a military type comb was put on to increase height. Just an odd item for the house... somewhere.

Hi Ron,

This is a French fireman helmet of around 1890 / 1910 with a comb for a French dragon helmet mod. 1874. So yes you are right, a mixture of military and non-military items. Here is the helmet from which the comb comes from.

Thanks for the photo and comment Alex. That's similar to the first one found cut in half and restored. This little guy though, is going to have the 'nice texture' removed and remain a wall hanger. This is the one I repaired, the plume is probably wrong, but.... It was also extremely expensive.... $20.
