Prussian Dragoon Officer Question

I recently viewed a Prussian Dragoon Officer helmet with all proper fittings, a single Prussian twin ring officer's Kokarde, and the "extra" pattern officer's liner with square leather tongues used before 1880. All parts looked as if they were never removed. I would date this helmet between 1871 - 1880.
The one unusual thing about this helmet was that the spike did not unscrew. All Dragoon regiments were authorized to wear a parade plume, so this seems odd.
Does anybody know why this might occur? Is there any reason an officer of Dragoons would buy a helmet in this configuration?
