Don't know what this would be worth...

"Gemeindevorsteher": (Germany) until 1945 Burgermeister-Mayor of a small town or village.

Francis

Definately a Prussian Sign missing the royal crown. The first word means community or borough...... the second..department?? Sorry that is all I can provide.

Correct !
Ort/Gemeinde=community

http://www.dict.cc/german-english/Vorsteher.html

Vorsteher= chief-head

Gemeinde Vorsteher= Bürgermeister=mayor

Is the town known? This part would have more historical meaning to the locals than actual collectors value. I could imagine that the crown was removed after 1918 as on the police helmets. You could add a crown of lacquered wood or pottery

Wasn't it foresighted of them to make the crowns detachable for possible revolutions?
