Question about The Constuction Of Uhlan Helmets

There is a Ulan Off for sale on e-bay right now . It is reputed as being an officer 's. Everything looks right EXCEPT the front visor trim. it looks to be a wide EM trim.

There are a few pics of the interior . Liner looks good but after the liner is rolled back it looks to have the flesh side leather showing.

I know in a spike helmet if you see the flesh side in the dome it is probably a fireman's helmet or civilian.

Does this hold true to an Uhlan's ? Did they use the grain side exposed in the dome ?

I have 2 EMs and they show the grain side .

Repro ?

You can look through the hole and it looks like the grain side on the inside of the mortar board but the flesh side on the skull.

This is a repro helmet- stay away! The body appears to be made of felt rather than leather (which can be OK on originals).

Cheers,
Arran.

A Tschapka shell is made just like any other leather Pickelhaube. There are differences like the shape, visor and liner application etc. but the construction methods are the same. If it looks weird, like Arran said, just walk away.

As far as I know, you won't see the inner side of the leather in any type of spiked helmet, civilian, fire or what have you (at least I've never seen it). The lacquer needed that rougher surface to adhere to.

I have a few firemans helmet ( 2 ) that have the flesh side showing and a original Baden police ( cross base ,chin scales , and griffon with out crown) Not sure if it was made that way or was cut off .
I think it is a police. All silver

Okay, like I said, I've never seen one, but that doesn't mean much. Maybe those helmets are from split hides.
