Red white and… dark blue?

Look at the colors on the field badge. This is not my helmet but someone asked me a question about it and if anyone had ever seen this before. The story that went with it revolved around a transfer of an officer from Oldenburg to the Marines. I don't know–very very unusual.

Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas? Thoughts? Everything is appreciated. :-k #-o

Nice Marine Infantry shako!

As you say the blue is very odd. Could it have faded that way over the years? It surely can't have looked like that back in the day? I can't imagine an individual being allowed to choose his own variation on the imperial colours...

Cheers

Chris is on the right track. The Oldenburg argument would gain no traction with me for two reasons.

1. The colors of the Großherzogtümer Oldenburg Land Kokarde/Feldzeichen (if the latter even existed) would be blue/red/blue (no white/silver).

2. The three Seebataillon regiments were Reich specific formations and would wear the Nationale colors only. There would be neither precedent nor tolerance for individual expression.

I attempted to discuss this subject HERE

To render specific Land colors on a bullion Feldzeichen, the wire is painted. I suspect either someone blew it (pun intended) or, as Chris suggested, the color has simply faded.
