Got this a while ago in DC, for a handful of peanuts. The surface was uniformly rusted but by chance the gray paint was still largely present. It took me a long time to get rid of the rust without damaging the paint. For the aficionados, this is the Lachmann made model, characterized by the very steep, almost vertical "lobster tail". Liner is intact.

How'd you get the rust off without hurting the paint?

Ultrafine sandpaper on open surfaces, then polishing compound. A micro-drill (low-speed...), micro-polishing tools, magnifying lenses and lots of patience to go along edges and around nuts...
