Gents,
I'm pleased to share my latest one with you: a Sachsen Mannschaften helmet of the II Sachsen Reiter Regiment. All the metal parts, the Kokarde, the leather, liner, Raupe are in a superb condition, as are the stitches, which is quite seldom for a 137 year old helmet! It's a very heavy helmet, I can't imagine this being comfortable in battle..
I've two questions on which I would appreciate your input.
1) The Kokarde is fitted on the right hand side. Similar helmets offered in recent Jan Kube auctions (although they don't come by that often..) also had the Kokarde fitted to the right, and this fact was mentioned as such in the catalogue discriptions. However, Brackmann/Smelzer ("Unter den Fahnen der alten Armee", 2010, p. 302) discribe these helmets with the Kokarde to be fitted on the left hand side?
2) The helmet has two rows of markings, stamped in opposite directions:
"II RR M 1875 4E" and "K S II RR".
What can you make of this?
Enjoy the pictures!
regards
Marcel
