Same person, …and different Pickelhauben.

Did the Pickelhauben have a evolution in it´s design during the two World Wars?
This first picture shows our personage as Kommandeur der Garden Kürassiere in Berlin.
It´s a detail of a Conrad Freyberg´s painting of 1909, a wonderful “Gemälde” of a Kurassiere´s riding “pickelhaubed”parade. He wears a eagled Pickelhaube…

… and just have a look to the same person at his son´s wedding in 1943. He wears a different Pickelhaube….
Anyway I thought that Pickelhauben were out of order after WW1!
Was usual led the old veterans to wear the Pickelhauben in special events?

Regards

The short answer is: Yes, many veterans continued to wear their old Imperial uniforms and pickelhauben.

The reason the helmet is different in the photograph is he's wearing the everyday version with a spike, the eagle was only put on the helmet for gala events. The eagle was removable, so they just changed it out for the spike for everyday wear.

Even in the US, veterans are authorized to wear their old uniforms for special events. I plan on wearing my dress blues if my daughter ever gets married. Unfortunately, no Pickelhaube!
