Scaley Question? - chinstraps GDC

Gradually working though the restoration of a late war (erzatz) GDC helmet, I'm curious about the construction of the chinscales.

The helmet was an e-bay purchase about 6 months ago. Nickel plated steel shell, gilded brass adler, erzatz wappen (thin pressing with worn-out die pressing deformities, one-piece pressed central adler - painted, not enameled).

Here is the specification from the remaining chinscale fragments:

1. Shellaced (black) on cotton covering, steel staples.

2. Thin brass scales but showing evidence of some form of gilding or wash that has a similar colour to mercury fire gilding.

3. The "spine" or supporting structure appears to be cardboard as opposed to the "bacon rind" type of leather that is normally encountered.

If any forum members can offer advice / guidance, it would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to restore the components to their original manufacture / specification.

Regards,

Martin.
