Schirmmützen – Dragoons from Baden

A reserve officer’s Schirmmütze and an eigentum Tellermütze for 3. Badisches Dragoner-Regiment Prinz Karl Nr.22, and a rakish reserve officer’s Schirmmütze for 1. Badisches Leib-Dragoner-Regiment Nr.20.

Details of the kokarden. Two slight variations of the reserve cockade, with the Leib-Dragoner example sporting a separate reservist cross on its open set of split pins, piercing the red felt center (In the DR22 example, the cross is integrated into the cockade). Not something you see often, but likely a simple self-service addition to his cap when he transitioned to reserve duty. Sharp eyes will note that the cross is upside down!

Sometimes the inside is just as interesting. The Tellermütze has a lovely maker’s mark for Ernst Bürkle, a vendor from Mühlhausen, the regimental garrison town. (This also dates the cap to after 1907, as the vendor is touting a 1907 gold medal he received.)

Meanwhile our guy from the Leib-Dragoner-Regiment was a baron, with a seven-pointed Freiherrenkrone over the monogram “W.” (If anyone has a resource that might help determine who Freiherr von W., or W. Freiherr von ??, was, I’d love to know!)

Still looking for an example from 2. Badisches Dragoner-Regiment Nr.21 in similar quality - if anyone sees/has one for sale, please let me know!
