Schoulder Straps "Chief" von OIR 91

Oldenburg

Well-known member
Here are different versions of schoulder straps from the Oldenburg Infantry Regiment No. 91, worn with the Regimental Uniform of
Grand Duke Friedrich August von Oldenburg as „Chief“ of his OIR 91, for viewing and comparison!

The photos are still being posted, I just had technical problems…..

I have seen straps of VIP's ( like yours )
where the fabricator of the strap simply applied the wrong (incorrect crown)
years later we notice this
but the royal who wore it never noticed

1) A pair of schoulder Straps in peacetime Style, 12 x 5 cm.
Rank , General of the cavalry (since 27.1.1900)
A wonderful pair
But I must ask you
with all respect
I do not understand why they are called Cavalry ?
white underlay with the " P " cypher would be I R 91
The only Oldenburg cavalry unit was Dragoon Regt 19
an " A " cypher and the straps with a silver tressa
If it any other regiment he would wear the uniform of that regiment
as a General of the Cavalry without an attachment to a regiment
the straps would not have a cypher

Steve,

I believe that Frank is simply stating the Grand Duke's actual rank; that of General der Kavallerie. Even though he was the chef of IR 91, that did not have any bearing on his rank. His colonelcy of IR 91 did not confer additional rank as an infantry general.

Dear Community,

just like Glenn proves it, I meant it. The additional designation „der Kavallerie, der Infanterie, der Artillerie (since 1889)“ was related to the branch of arms from which the General originally ermerged.
Friedrich August emerged from the career of a Cavalry Officier. For a royal highness it was necessary to serve his career in the noble Cavalry!
Best regards
Frank

Just a slight variation on a theme. As seen above, the Grand Duke of Oldenburg had a single commission as a Prussian General der Kavallerie. Below we see General der Infanterie and Kavallerie Herzog Johann Albrecht zu Mecklenburg. The reason for the two ranks is simple. He held a Grand Ducal Mecklenburg commission as a General der Infanterie and a Prussian commission as a General der Kavallerie. Here is his listing in the 1914 Prussian Rangliste as the chief of Jäger-Bataillon Nr. 14.

Regards
Glenn
