Another scenario could be that beginners--who would've normally bid on this had it been a more common/classic spike helmet like the M15 Prussian Infantry's--simply didn't know what this was or how rare/important a scroll helmet can be to bid... 4 years ago, as a first imperial pickelhaube, all I was looking for was a 'spike helmet with some Prussian eagle', whether 'golden' or 'gray'. I was lucky enough to buy one which turned out to be an authentic M15 EM version as advertized, although with a detached visor. I could've easily bought a fake instead and not know it.
