Previously, I posted a photo of a JR 68 officer uberzug on some sort of helmet. After some conversation with myself, I bought it at the SOS. I am always a bit of an observer at the Show, looking for helmets to work on and watching James and Gus spend their money! :) I have to watch my US $ stash so I tend to buy small items like officer spike tops, kokarden etc. I have been to numerous shows and this is the first red numbered officer uberzug that I have seen in decades. The last one I bought (Hessen Arty) was purchased in the 80's out of a cardboard box. So here are some photos of the officer helmet and it's original cover:

JR 68 is a Prussian unit so no surprise, an 1890's style reservist officer helmet. The helmet is untouched but needs a bit of work. You can see uberzug fires still stuck to the front visor where the finish melted. The cover as we shall see, has corresponding finish stains and marks so we know helmet and cover belong together.

The spike top is removable but JR did not wear a trichter to parade.

The top is sunken and going to have to be put back into position. Some finish work is also going to have to be done.

It is obvious from the interior that the helmet has seen a lot of use.

The officer style uberzug with red pre war numbers and reversible manoeuvre band:

The fibre reinforcement strip for the front visor has been lost and we do have some minor tears but overall....decent condition. The red numerals on this are perfect, when on so many of these they are moth eaten.

The rear side shows finish staining from the helmet shell.

Interior view showing red manoeuvre band worn by enemy forces during the Kaiser's fall war games. I am pleased with my purchase of this cover which shows a great deal of "real use". J. R. 68, 6th Rheinisches Inf. Regt. 1860, Coblenz VIII A. K.

Congratulations on this excellent find Brian. (y)

I'll look forward as always to seeing your work on the pickelhaube.

Best Wishes,

Alan
