Found this helmet in my late husband collection. Was damaged in shipping from Australia to Singapore and I got it slightly repaired.

That's a beautiful helmet Amy, but I do have a couple of questions.
Could you post side view photos?

John

Here's the side view.

Feedback welcome. I also have a M67 NCO version if comparison is needed.

Regards
Amy Bellars

Amy,
It's a beautiful helmet, but there are a couple of concerns. It's an officer's helmet so it should have rosettes to hold on the chinscales instead of screw posts. That is very, very minor. The Wappen is an M1871 type with the three "VVV" tailfeathers. I have fought that battle before and I am still not sure which came first; the M71 Wappen or the M71 helmet. There are a lot of M67's out there with this type of Adler. For me, that question still remains unanswered. My biggest concern is the liner. That type of officer liner wasn't used until 1880. A Model 1867 should have a square tongue liner. Does it look like the liner has been replaced? Is it possible that the helmet had a rear spine at some point? It could be a Model 1871 officer type that was made after 1880 but just missing a rear spine. Another indication that it may be a 1871 is the Kokarde. M67's would normally have a single diagonally serrated silver ring instead of a twin ring. I'm not certain when the change in Kokarde took place. I have officer M71's with single and twin rings, but my M67's only have the single ring.

Hi John

Thank you for your post.

I did suspect the rosettes rather than the screw posts on officer helmet.

Officer liner was replaced as the original officer liner - the sweatband without the scalloped shaped edges was rotten.

Eagle sits nicely on the helmet so am not sure of the wappen.

It certainly has no rear spine.
