The CDV That Got Away

Lost Skeleton

A German eBayer recently offered a Portraitfoto of a young Jäger in JB 10 that I tried hard to win. Though purely a coincidence, the Jäger wears a private purchase Tschako in lacquered leather that is the very twin of one in my collection. Why do I say "private purchase?" The Tschako profile is much lower than issued models, and the helmet is not equipped with side ventilator buttons. Additionally, the chin strap is glossy patent leather with early pattern solid Knopf 91 lugs. For a lark, I superimposed my Tschako over the CDV for comparison. Unfortunately, the height was exaggerated by my camera lens, but I can assure you, if someone told me both helmets were one and the same, I would never question it.

First a photo of the Tschako to convey its true proportions:

Next, the eBay CDV (fair use, I hope):

Now, the composite image:

Well, am I crazy?

Hey Charles, that Shako you pasted in there looks like it was always part of the photo and was artificially colored for special effects :thumb up:

It does seem taller than it actually is in reality; couldn't you slightly compress/distort it downwards?

Cool! Joe posted a photo on my 6th KR helmet that showed a Kuerassier's wedding photo. Similarly, a near identical private purchase helmet. I tried to match it to the photo, but it's not easy, the camera angle and distance from the couple made it very frustrating. After six tries I ended up with a 'well, it's close, but who knows?'
Still a lot of fun to speculate about.

Great helmet Chas. regarding the foto...were you going up against the infamous, "Banjo Picker"? Anything he wants foto wise he gets.

Sorry to hear that you didn't get that CDV. I've been amazed at the skyrocket high prices that certain images will bring on eBay.de. & eBay.com. I've lost out on several this past year myself that I had really wanted badly.

As a side note, I've bought a few images from Banjo Picker a couple of years ago when he was selling several photo postcards. I met Marshall back in the early 1980's. He had the largest private collection of field gray uniforms in the entire world until he sold it several years ago. It's my understanding that most of the uniforms in the massive "Feldgrau" book that came out a couple years ago are from his former collection.

Best Regards,

Alan

So the infamous Banjo Picker is Marshall D ?? Even I have heard of his uniform collection and the sale.
