Hey Brian,
Risking total humiliation as to authenticity or paint job, I'll start by posting my very own EM Cockades to help you kick start the tutorial on these as well.

SET 1 - PRUSSIAN EM KOKARDEN:

SET 2 - SAXON EM KOKARDEN (not serrated as typical for this German State):

We had a test on these in some old thread that was started by Chas. Most all of us failed. So do not feel alone–maybe someone can determine what the old thread was. Not an easy subject for me.

Hey Ron

I posted something similar recently about kokarden

http://www.pickelhaubes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5684

I got burnt on a couple kokarden a while ago. I always need to see a back photograph of the kokarde to make sure it hasnt been repainted. The back should always be the same color as the color on front. Also I always im looking for a certain "gloss" to the paint to be sure but it is one tough subject be sure about.

BTW yours look good to me.

I agree it is quite hard to distinguish fakes from real ones, let alone by looking at pictures only...
My Saxon Cockade set seems to have 'less paint' on the reverse and in some spots seem to have been retouched in white (see the different white tones on the State cockade)
