The Debate About Snipers

I decided to "take aim" at the comments made by Michael Moore that "snipers are cowards." I wrote a piece on the myth and history of snipers for ArmchairGeneral:

I already made the comment to Pete...."we have not heard from him (Michael) or about him in years." It was in MHO simply a publicity stunt to get some "press" out there, some notoriety. His entire raison d'etre is generating expose documentaries and notoriety. Why else would anyone in the US risk criticizing a true American hero? FYI.....I have read the book, seen the movie and also did internet searches to broaden my knowledge on this subject.

Sniping is a rotten, dirty, difficult job. It takes a certain type of person (men and women) to do it. Give me a tank any time... that way, I can sit behind Chobham and 'snipe' from three kilometers... or better yet, Artillery, ten or more miles. It's those wimpy drone 'pilots' who are sissies. (Kidding!)

This debate has been going on (albeit in a different form) for hundreds of years. Knights considered archers/bowmen as without honor because of the anonymity of their killing - a knight could be done in by a "bolt from the blue" rather than in a face to face encounter. War is brutal, even if we try to establish rules for it. Just my two pfennigs.
