Yes Joe, but that is not the only problems, like people in South Africa have maps and know where Iraq is but some US Americans can not afford to go to South Africa or Asia, so we need help the rest of the world by assisting them in their education of their youth so that they have the same chane to succede in the world. after seeing a report on where Canadian students stand in testing, (number 2) I think that we can improve the overall world test levels, after all, we are number...21 woo hoo.

Sorry Mark,
The reposrt I saw listed Canada #2, in science and math, and we came in 21st, that is because we have a program called "no child left behind" but what that means is "no child gets ahead" We have a strong idea of equality here, so the easiest way to be fair is to teach in such a manner that the slowest child can keep up with the rest of the class. the real sad thing is, that dumb kid that is keeping one class behind, could have excelled in another subject if he (she) had not been held back by someone who did not do well in that one.
As far as educating half as many kids, I think the percentage is much less, but then the number of teachers is less too.

Not to worry Gus, we will soon be down in the 20's at least here in Ontario. Our education system has become very politicized with the provincial government demanding an 85% graduation rate from high school. Attendance no longer counts, teachers are not to take marks off for late assignments. If you do not hand in a major assignment and are failing, your teacher has to provide it to you again at the end of the semester and you have yet another chance to complete it without penalty. The paper work involved for the teacher when someone chooses to fail is very significant. We run around practically begging kids to hand stuff in now. It is much easier to simply give the student 50% and forget it. Of course, the politicians now crow about how they have improved the system as the percentage pass rate goes up!
We are raising a generation of adolescents who believe school is a joke and that they have no responsibility for their own education. Obviously, they will make up a "super work force" in the future. However, once the private sector wakes up and starts complaining about the quality of their workers then we will spend more millions of tax dollars in reforms and "investigating committees" to turn the system back to where it was when we actually turned out excellent product. Sorry, but the Canadian scores on international tests have always been higher than their US counterparts. However, of late we have chosen to adopt made in the USA educational reform models and we are going to pay the price.
One gets very cynnical after 30 yrs in the teaching game. The good kids with the excellent minds survive high school and go on to college or university despite large class sizes and harried teachers. Those identified as "learning disadvantaged" enjoy classes under 20 and have millions spent on them in special programmes so that they can get through. However, who will contibute more to our society?? The kids with special needs do have to be looked after and helped but we do not need to lower our standards to do so just to make the politicians look good.
I will now climb down off my soap box! Brian

Things are sad in public schools.
Some of my students have asked me--sincerely--what I did in WWII.
I'm 41.
:o
It's spooky.

I am seeing these kids in the work force today. the push through idea was a big thing where I live as all 5 high school's were maxed out , I shared my locker. I did fail , but many friends should of as well . I know the education I got may have it's down fall's but I know the Skilled trades classes I took and the math was much higher , Computer's were just being introduced ,The Pet was the tool. I find there to much empasis on the computer ,and reliance by the student's.
I know many teacher in ontario and I feel for them .Toronto is now wanting to segrate a few of it's schools, that is insane and will take more funds out of your baords budget, my area's as well.
Keep the faith , hope you are going to Ortona next year.
Mark
