Trois mousquetaires

Hi Guys

Thought you might enjoy seeing two period CDV images of French soldiers of the 1870-1871 War.

The image on the left depicts two Infantrymen of what I believe to be a Garde Mobile battalion. Both men are armed with the 1867 Tabatiere rifle, a converted muzzle loader, which was issued to secondary troops. The Garde Mobile and Garde Nationale battalions comprised most of the troops left to France after the Battle of Sedan and the surrender of Metz.

The image on the right shows an Infantryman of a line regiment armed with the M1866 Chassepot rifle. The reverse of the CDV is dated July 1870 with a personal dedication to a friend. This man is possibly a reservist, called to the colors that summer and on his way to join his regiment.

Cheers

Larmo
