West: Great shako, with "Sweet Markings" they just do not get any better than that! The ventilation system above the M91 posts....I have never seen that before. Is that unique to See Battalion? Obviously this is a Government issued piece so not some sort of private purchase design. How you were able to buy an original See feldzeichen blows my mind, I guess you have to live in Europe. This proves that it is still possible to buy a helme missing some parts and complete it. Excellente!!

Loree i am not sure the ventilation system is unique for seebattaillon tschako,s but the tschako they have in the Army museum in Brussel has the same ventilation systeem and i also have seen it on some pictures , and yes in live in Europe i purchased the feldzeichen recently in Germany on a militaryshow i never expected to find one ever my head almost exploded when i saw it :D .

What is the leather band and small leather strap visible on the shako posted by Westfront? Any ideas? I've never seen that on any other piece. :?:

Well, it would seem that we have discovered another unique feature regarding the See Battalion shako's ventilation system. We have 2 examples here but we need more from other members who have a similar original shako in their collection to make this a characteristic that collectors should look for. My thoughts are that this shuttered vent was developed because they were literally at sea on board a ship with waves splashing spray all around them. Comments???
