Understanding Cockades

What is the difference between the cockades with the large holes that fit over the posts and the ones with a small hole? Were they both used and how do you get the ones with the small hole on the helmet? Do they somehow go behind the posts?

Anyone have a pair of original Prussian cockades (mannschaften) for sale at a reasonable price?

Thanks.

Peter

Hi Peter, welcome to the forum, great question. The small hole cockades are for older pre 1891 helmets. These helmets used a bolt on system for fastening the chin scales to the shell. In 1891 they came up with the Model 91 side posts which you see on your avatar helmet. They also began to use simple leather chin straps (like your helmet) instead of the older scales. I would recommend going to the Kaiser's Bunker website to see real examples of what I am talking about and also gain some knowledge of the changes our helmets went through from 1842 to 1915. The site owner Tony Schnurr is a member and his sight is an encyclopedia of pickelhauben. So to finish up...the large hole cockades are for the M91 post while the smaller hole kokarden are for the earlier pre 1891 helmets. You can not use the small hole on the post 1891 helmets.
