Hi Amy,

I found one of these ersatz 2nd Guard Uhlan Tschapka a few years ago. Same ersatz body, same metal mortar board, and same style of attachment for the mortarboard. This one looks to be in nicer shape than my example. I have left my Tschapka in uncleaned condition. Apparently there are not very many of these ersatz examples that exist. I remember Weitze had a very nice example he sold a few years ago also.

Every example that I have seen of this ersatz tschapka all have the same exact larger, more flat style Guard Star on them, which is not like the usual guard star one sees on the leather body 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Guard Ulan Officer helmets.

Here is the link to my example: https://www.pickelhaubes.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8425&hilit=guard

I saw one of these at the SOS on Wednesday night set up, 2 or 3 years ago. It was just like this one you posted, and like my example.

Here is a link to my other 2nd Guard Uhlan Tschapka that Brian restitched the leather sweatband back into the helmet: https://www.pickelhaubes.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10922

It was very nice to meet you and your husband at the S.O.S. this year! Thanks to both of you for taking the time to stop and visit with me!

Best Regards,

Alan

Alan, thank you for the links. Very nice example that you have.
The chinscales and rosettes have lost the brass gilding, and I have spare ones to match the mercury on the eagle plate so that should look okay. Going to finish it later. This one, Rod, my hubby, found it at the recent SOS. He bought it and guess what, he marked it up by $500 within ten minutes and sold it to me. I have to give him full credit for his robbing job. It's a pleasure meeting you and the guys at pickelhaubes.com

Brian, the stitching is not easy on mine. My fingers are breaking and it's my first time doing stitching on uhlan as well. For mine, all the leather holes on the helmet body are blocked and I have given up halfway LOL

Could this be an Uhlan version of a 'Koffer helm'? I would imagine it could be packed pretty easily with the helmet over the inverted mortar board. Nice helmet in any case! :)

:D Ron

Here is the tool you need Amy. Stitch holes filled in with melted shellac is a common problem, use this small hand drill to clean them out.
