Unofficial sleeve insignia

Unremarkable postcard - or is it?
This weary looking soldier is wearing a M1910 Vereinfachte Feldrock which has no shoulder straps. On his sleeve, just above the barrel cuff, I noticed two stripes. I first figured this was a repair, but it is a bit to ordered for that I think. These look more like unofficial unit insignia, sometimes worn by assault troops.

I've seen similar ones like | X and | + but not this | -- yet.

Opinions needed?

Sam,

He is a member of Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 25 of 208. Infanterie-Division wearing the sleeve insignia introduced in June 1917.

Regards
Glenn

Thanks Glenn, I'm glad I noticed this small detail and that we now know the meaning. I always love me some special insignia.
