Hello All,

I sold a bavaian officer's helmet a while back... that was not in the best of shape (shell was dry rotted and cracked) but it was also cool because it was named to the officer......

well.... now it has been 'modified' to be a chev. all silver helmet with a new silk and all new fittings.

Here are pics of the way I soild it...

and the interior

Interesting thing...... it's named to him with a L. I. R... which is Landwer Infantry Regiment... but he has it all as all silver now..... can you say... oops !

Hey Mark,
what did he do to the top of the helmet, from the inside, one can still see thatt he shell is damaged, did he fill out the top with bondo. There is not much available on ebay anymore that has not been messed with in some way.
Gus

hey gus,

thre was nothing to do from the outside.. as the spike base would cover all the damaged areas.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark, Gus
If you look at the top just below the spike it still has an space or shadow .Maybe he tried the strech the leather while damp.
As for the nickel furniture I have no idea . I have heard of home plating gold or silver but that ia lot to do at home .
My 2 cents worth

Hey Mark,
I'll bet you are very upset to let such a nice helmet slip through your hands, if you had only cleaned that tarnish off the spike and Wappen, you would have had a rare Landwehr helmet with silver fittings, as for the linner, it must have been stuffed up under the head band.
Best wishes
Gus

Hey Guys,

I think what he must have done was to replace all the furniture with some silver that he had (perhaps from another trashed helmet).

Gus,

Gosh darn it.. I knew I should have rubbed harder when I used the Brasso ! :D

Cheers

Hi Mark:

With flat chinscales, I believe Leib Garde was the intended impression. Did the eBay seller buy the helmet from you, or were there other links in the chain of custody?

It's a lot of effort for an item starting at 5.50 Euro with no reserve.

Chas.

Not trying to be nitpickey or critical of any one, just don't understand why anybody would want to take a decent historically significant all original helmet, and swap out the hardware? As nice as it may look with the silver hardware, after all is said and done, when anyone looks inside they will still see that it was originally a Landwehr helm, ( a nice one at that). :(

My last two cents is, I would have repaired the korpus as was done and have the liner repaired, and left it as it was, a nice example of a Bavarian Landwehr Officer's helmet. That's just me though.

Could we use the before pic for a future Landwehr Headgear thread mravery?

Geo

Hey Geo,

Sure.. you can use it if you like.. no problem...

and I'm sure he 'upgraded it' in the name of making $$$$$.. he is into me for $700 so lets see what it goes for.

Cheers

I bought from him on ebay a Mecklemburg artillery EM helmet. He did acknowledge in the ad that condition was not great, but, much worse, it turned out to be a horrendous put-together parts helmet... reluctantly, he reimbursed me.

Well....

I sent the buyer an e-mail telling him about the helmet and if he wants more details or pics to let me know... but no response back yet.

Cheers

Hi everybody!

I totally agree with all the posts here. This person transforms and/or restore helmets in Paris, then either he sells them by himself or he uses another person during the Antik shows. Very often it is well done. Unfortunately.

We have discussed examples of this guys' "put together work" before. The most difficult part of this conversion would be the square viosr trim. Having a silver piece that would fit would be a matter of tremendous luck or...harder still he has someone who can make it. As to the LRI markings being a give away...perhaps to us on the forum but there are still all kinds of people out there who throw money at these things on Ebay who have no real knowledge of the pickelhaube and the Imperial Army.
