Visor cap identification

Dear All

Here is a recent acquisition about which I do not know much.

Based on my rough research, that would be a cap for a NCO of the Waldeck & Reuss state, one of the smallest state of the old Reich. The piping around the middle band would suggest a man of a Hussard or Ulhan regiment, but no certainty on that. Timing would be pre-1870 possibly due to change in clothing and equipment rules after that date.

Interior is made of that oily-cloth material. The liner band is of an ersatz type. Beautiful and clear maker’s label, logo and location of manufacture (Greitz was the capital of that state). Very good condition overall.

Any additional light on that little cap would be very much welcome

Best

The cockade is Waldeck, but I don't recognize the color combination of the cap. Then again I'm not up on the pre 1900 caps.

Hi Tim_be

It may well be but for some reasons I have a doubt. In the Prussian army, those colours would be for an husaren regiment. The only difference is the absence of piping on the crown...😬

To my knowledge Reuss only fielded one battalion; the 2nd Battalion of IR96. They wore a gilt eagle Wappen with the Reuss Wappen attached to it. One would think that the piping along the top of this Schirmmutze should be white, but as already mentioned, this would be for a Hussar Regiment. Reuss had no Hussar Regiment. I'm not sure that we can follow the Prussian rules on piping when it comes to this Schirmmutze. Reuss may have done something completely different. To me this Schirmmutze doesn't look military, maybe belonging to a Beamter, but that does not make it so. It could be an Infantry Schirmmutze from the 2nd Bn IR96.

It's hard to tell what some of the smaller German states did.

BTW Nice Cover!
