We come in peace

What an amazing find! Evidently they tried to locate enemies by sound, then using the eyepieces with the small peep hole sights allowed to narrow in the position. Acoustic location was used a lot in WWII in the AA role but this thing looks like an old topophone!

Today this seems awkward but it did work against airplanes up to 30 kilometers away (at least the more elaborate versions). The famous movie "Hell's Angels" from 1930 also shows them being used. But as man-portable devices on the battlefield, it seems you would run into an enemy before you'd hear him.

Extremely rare picture for sure, and top quality too!

The reaction to this photo has been incredible. My Flickr photostream went from an average 3-4 thousand views a day to 10 thousand plus!

I have used Robert's marvellous explanation and illustration under the original picture as I suspect, he's closest to the pin on the explanation of the apparatus.

Thanks all.
