Hi Mark:

I have seen the film several times. The narrative is based on Ernst Johannsen's novel, Vier von der Infanterie.

You will find it quite similar to All Quiet on the Western Front.

I own a copy, it's one of my favorites. Disregarding the story line, there are a lot of details you can pick up regarding the German army in 1918. The lieutenant wears a 1918 cut out stahlhelm, which to Germans probably symbolised the end of the war. The film was made in the early thirties, and there must have been a lot of vets in the audience. Look for the Bavarian singing a little ditty while engaged in a cootie hunt in the trenches. Cool equipment and uniform details. A great flick!
