What does the marking stand for?

Here it goes. I can't load the pictures for some reason.

Marking is 8 A. F. 1888

The marking is inside a M1871 artillery Spike helmet

If the helmet has a gilt Grenadier Adler Wappen it would be marked to the 8th field artillery.
If the helmet has a gilt line Adler Wappen it belongs to the 8th foot artillery out of Metz.

Also the field artillery would have used curved chinscales. The foot artillery used flat chinscales.

A.F. and F.A.R. are often interchangeable for field and foot artillery regiments.

Hi John,

According to the "Vorschrift über das Bezeichnen und Numeriren der ........Waffen" from 1877, Feldartillerie was marked x.A.x.xx and Fußartillerie x.A.F.x.xx to make a clear distinction between the two. It doesn't look like the F.A.R. marking was in use yet.

Why would that be so different for the marking of equipment?
