Chas:

From the shape, it appears to be a 1872 Pattern Marine Applikanten dirk with a replaced open-style officer's pommel. However, I have never seen a lion's head hilt before!! Am I close?

Bingo Dave!

In this case a Zahlmeister Applikanten (paymaster apprentice) Modell 1872. This piece is fitted with an ALCOSO Damast blade and a scabbard with hand chased fittings (oakleaves and acorns, what else).

Sehr deluxe.

I could only parrot Tony and Otto by saying Sweet Mother of Pearl; what a one-of-a-kind piece!!!! Congratulations.

Thanks guys!

Last summer, a Canadian eBayer, "forthenryantiques," was auctioning the very twin of my dirk. It never met its reserve, and was never relisted. I was really surprised to see another, damascus blade and all.

In fact, I thought nothing could compare until I stumbled upon this at the MAX. However, IMO, a lion beats a chicken any day of the week (especially one with a damaged crown).
