What's the Dome made of?

That's my only question, what is that dome made of? If it's leather, it looks like cork or rusted steel...

It certainly looks like it's been put together from bits and pieces and I share your feeling, but that texture inside confuses me because the aging on the shell looks good (Unless the fakers have added a new trick). If it's leather, then it's flaking or something. This one would be a fun one to take a close look at.
