I was watching this item as a possible restoration project, but Ive just been looking closely at the pics and there are more than a few things that seem wrong.

At first I thought it was an easy restoration early (1871 ?) Garde Grenadier pickelhaube. I have the spike, the scales and attachments and the spine to correct the incorrect parts.

I was going to have a go, replace the wrong bits give it a bit of a clean and stick it straight on the shelf, as the liner and shell look to be very cleanupable  (I know its not a word) Now Ive spent a bit of time studying the pics Im not so sure. That wappen dosnt seem to be sitting correctly on the shell to me and being honest Im not sure if the L.G. stamp and that wappen go together? Also I have a broken one of these wappen I picked up in a ploughed field some years ago and it looks different around the tail feathers.

Then I spotted the ghosting on the rear view of the helmet and the right side view. Was there a cruciform base on this helmet, or was there a comb?

Also there seem to be 2 er things?..plugs? vents? whatever? either side of the spike. You can see them clearly in the front rear and both side views.

Is this helmet as I suspect now, a total put together? Is it a fire helmet or such with a 91 pattern spike and a broken 95 pattern spine and a wappen bent to suit holes it wasnt meant to fit with a stamp that dosnt match?

I hand it to the experts. If someone says the plate matches the mark and the plugs are because it was re worked from an 1860 pattern I will be overjoyed, but I think a reworked would likely have more issue stamps?

What do you chaps think? leave well alone?

Hmm think I just answered my own question seller called pickelhaube you would guess may know a little more or give a little more info? He seems to be selling mainly fire helmets or fire helmets with spikes on?

A little more research in jeff noll`s book on markings, a few other books and google (which linked me back here to an early thread) L.G. seems to stand for land gendarmerie or rural (civil) police. Seems the wappen may well be original to this shell after all. Apparently they were issued garde grenadier wappen and may have moved to the extra star in or around 1895. That means the wappen is likely original, or atleast correct for the shell? or am I jumping to conclusions. Still dosnt seem to explain what looks like a cruciform shadow on the shell though :-? Any help will be much appreciated.

I am not an expert, but I would suggest to leave it alone because it looks like a pimped fire helmet to me.

Regards,

Edwin

I wouldn't bid on this... Looks all wrong and I don't like that wapen either.

Yes your right. The L.G. stamp says its a police helmet, but that wappen just isnt right, atleast not for that helmet. The spike, the spine all wrong. Still not convinced its a fire helmet, but there is no way that any of the metal work was put on the helmet in 1883.
Every helmet he has on ebay at the moment is wrong!! The 1915 Bavarian has the wrong spine, the front trim dosnt look right and the wappen looks wrong for the rest of the helmet. Even some of his past sales look put together. How has he managed to have only 1 negative feedback? (which he managed to get removed)
Is this seller known to people on the forum already?
