A different spin on the modern copy being passed off as a period item: "Unfortunately, the shell has been painted. Solder slop on the spike. Helmet is being sold as is. Hopefully someone can bring this back to the right condition."

The appeal to the potential buyers' hopes of getting a rare fixer-upper at a bargain price is interesting. Maybe the seller genuinely thinks it's an original helmet. :-k

However, the whole thing's new, top to bottom. A myopic, inebriated bonobo could've stitched the leather pieces together more accurately.

The seller also has a Saxon Pickelhaube replica correctly described as such. The GWM stamp in the neckguard most likely stands for Great War Militaria---the threaded (and rather heavy) detachable spike is one of the biggest clues to the source. Kammersburg is a variation on Chambersburg, PA.

I don't get it either. The Wurt. is a piece of junk, which is obviously a fake and the Saxon is a pretty nice repro, except "bidet" nozzle under the spike. Confusing.
