Wurttemburg M71. on Age of Kings.

Has anyone got any opinions on this helmet on the "Age of King's" site, the Wurttemberg M71? It states that the helmet has never been touched but the cockade is on the wrong side of the helmet and it looks slightly wierd (to me, anyway). However my main question is regarding the liner, are they really supposed to look this way on these earlier helmets - I was expecting a dozen and more square tounges?

You are right, one would expect that a pre-1897 helmet had the State kokorde on the rh side. Maybe this helmet was still being used post 1897?

Hi Mikey:
Funny, I was scoping out that very helme last night. I have never seen a liner like that but my experience with 1871 era helmets is very limited. Other than that, I like it especially the higher cruciform spike base. The spike itself is "stubby" which is typical of these helmets. None of that tall spike stuff for the old boys!! Brian

It was also made after 1880. Only after 1880 did Officer liners appear with leather sweatbands coupled by a silk skull cap. An actual Franco-Preußen war helmet would have all leather squared fingers.

I have a post 1880 private pourchase Saxon 108th shako with the same style liner and will post a photo as soon as the Image Shack website is back in operation.

HOLD UP there R1! How about a new thread? I'll post mine as well.

Tony: Good idea. Go ahead and post yours. Image Shack is down for maintenance and I don't know how long it will be before the website is again functional.
