Alas.. in my efforts to learn more, the novice may have found something wrong?
I am thinking the reserve cross is mounted too low (at least not typical) and should be plain...this cross appears engraved...

Dan,

You've come far Pilgrim! This is a wonderful example to take a look at and pick holes at it. Find a methodology for searching the helmet and try to repeat that methodology. We are fortunate with Wurttemberg helmets that there is a wonderful reference.

I think it is worth having his book before you buy anything from Wurttemberg.
There are fluted spikes from Wurttemberg. They seem always to have an enameled star, and there is no evidence of one having been attached to this wappen.

The landwehr cross is incorrect for the reasons you mentioned.

There are two Reich's cockades on this thing. You know the problems with changing out cockades.

The reference cited as no pictures of any landwehr cross in the lower position.

Not so fast there. Have a look at the helmet below, a family purchase. Here are more photos >> http://www.kaisersbunker.com/dunkelblau/helmets/dbh24.htm

Joe, if you look very carefully at the photo top left on p. 29 of Konigreich Wurtemberg Die Militarischen Kopfbedeckungen 1869-1919 you will see that Adolf Haid has the Landwehr Cross in the lower position.

Goodness you are right! I was dead wrong. How many times have I said "many sets of eyes--you will miss something!" Thanks Tony. This is the exception but obviously exists. Yours has no motto as normal but like Baden I'm sure there were non-standard crosses with motto's.

Where is my little box????? :( :(

But I wonder why some were worn center on the Wappen and some were worn low? With Preußen it is well documented. But for Württemberg I can find nothing to explain this? Ugh. Here we go again...........

High, middle or low, all Wurttemberg landwehr crosses are plain...not like the inital post, so something is amiss. I would also presume that the spike is Bavarian (or Mecklenburg).
As discussed before, Prussian and Wurttemberg fluted spikes are different.
