Your opnion please on this remarkable haube.

Dear all,

This haube has been in my collection for some time now and I think its quite remarkable (and probably fake). According to the sellers description, it concerns an unusual NCO field promotion of the Prussiuan guard, explaining the officers-type spike and chinstrap. Offcourse a sellers description means little and fortunately it was not very expensive.

Hey Edwin....totally assembled from various parts in my opinion. We would never find officer parts on an M15 helmet with grey fittings. Helmet plate also looks too big for the hat, any extra holes behind the plate? Spike top does not look quite normal and does not seem to fit. It should screw down right over the neck. In addition, the M91 side posts have been taken off to fit the scales on. Who would do this?? Chin scales and spike also look as if they have been chemically darkened. The patina is not even and has runs in it ie. a chemical agent was brushed on. I ran into this recently with a supposed Prussian helmet which came out of Germany. Everything was darkened and bogus. It was a fire helmet conversion. It had blackened chin scales too, one of which was actually longer than the other!
 
The metal parts seem to be the type made in India lately. The shell may also be a new one that's been daubed with shellac or paint. The stitching seems to stand away from the leather as if there's no groove for it.
 
Thanks chaps. I'll keep it as a reminder of my inexperience and that's why I only purchase stuff from established dealers these days.

(That last one is especially amusing....he has confused the 'burgs...)
 
Indeed, established can be a tricky thing too. However, I was referring to dealers that are frequently mentioned in on this forum a positive way and can therefore be considered as reputable .

Perhaps its just my opinion, but there seem to be a lot of weasels out there (and especially on ebay) who are trying to to fool collectors of militaria. That's also one of the reasons why I like this forum because it allows one to get some good feedback on these issues.
