Zoll Questions

All, with my first foray into pickelhaube collecting, I picked up a Prussian infantry and zoll helmet. I am pulling my hair out trying to figure some things out so I thought I'd ask the experts here. All of the pics of the zoll I have seen, when viewed form the side, have kokardine. However this one doesn't. So are they missing? Secondly, the chin scales are connected with a enameled cross screw. While this screw looks period, I cannot imagine that it is regulation. Added later? Lastly, the "Kalahne" looks more like a name than a maker's stamp. Yes? I appreciate the patience with the novice questions in advance.-RQ

Welcome Magnum, no questions are irrelevant here or "novice". We are all on a learning curve, in this hobby, it's just that some of us are a bit further along the curve than others. That blue pin is an add on, just a quick solution to the missing brass button or T shaped fitting which normally holds the scales together. I don't know much about customs helmets but I would guess that there should be a Reichs kokarde on the right hand side (when worn). It is a private purchase officer helmet, so that kokarde would be in the officer stytle. I have never owned one of these but others here on the forum have them and will be able to help with definitive answers.

Hello Magnum,

presumably, the helmet of Ober-Zollinspektor G. Kalähne of the Haupt-Zoll-Amt (Main Customs Office) in Altona in the early 1890s.

Glenn

Thank you, gentlemen. I greatly appreciate your feedback.

Glenn, I am guessing that, one day when I get to where I want to be in this hobby, that I can find a list of "Ober-Zollinspektors" with one named of "G. Kalähne of the Haupt-Zoll-Amt (Main Customs Office) in Altona?"

I mean, the 5Ws on any period item are a bonus beyond merely admiring it as it is. Seriously, that is incredible. Thanks again.

Hello RQ,

Welcome to the forum!

That's a beautiful Zoll Beamte helmet you recently acquired. Congratulations! =D> :bravo:

Looks like you've caught the "haube-collector" virus for which there is no known cure. :)

Best Regards,

Alan

Thank you Alan. Yes, I tried to deny it for years but I could resist no longer. Unfortunately, I am finding out that, my haube "lust" is only getting worse!
