Steve,
are there any details/informations on the backside (photographer & town name)?
Otherwise, a big enlargement of the Schulterklappe would be helpful.
;) Greetings Jens

@ nzef1940: the cartridge 1903 is really great - thanks for showing! (y)
possible for 1903 & infantry : 1. Garde-R z. Fuß; GR3; IR14; IR31; IR32; IR69; IR77; IR116; IR143; IR165; IR172.

Thanks fyi the cartridge is from a WW1 German flare pistol and was bought back by a New Zealand veteran.

I don't think that we can tell anything form his shoulder straps
I can't made them out
The card was never mailed or written on
The name of the photographer and his town are on the back
Maybe if an artillery regiment was garrisoned at that
town it might tell us which one that it is?
Thanks

His he Wurttemberg ?
Steve

Steve,
yes - probably württemberger Field Artillery - the photo is from Ludwigsburg:
https://wiki.genealogy.net/Garnisonsorte_1914
... and there was the Württemberger Field Artillery Regiment No. 29 & No.65.
Both units won the Königsabzeichen: FAR29: 1895, 1898, 1901 - the FAR65: 1905 and 1912.
https://wiki.genealogy.net/Kaiserpreis_(Schiesswettbewerb_von_1895_bis_1913)

I estimate the photo after 1899. Since 1899, the burning round grenade (+ number) was used on field artillery shoulder boards.
The image resolution is unfortunately not good enough to identify the shoulder board number, so both units are possible.
;) Best regards, Jens

I agree I had looked up Wurttemberg Artillery
Only 4 units
and the other 2 were in another city
FAR 29 had a cypher
FAR 65 had the flaming bomb and a #
but we can't tell
what I will try next is to look at the list of Artillery Kaiser prize winners
and see if that tells us anything
Thanks
Steve

Steve,
that*s correct, but the FAR29 have the cypher "L" until May 1913 and the Königsabzeichen they won before that time. ;)
Best regards, Jens
Jens
I found that
FAR 29 won the Kaiser prize 3 times
1895 =8 bat
1898 = 5 Bat
1901 =2 bat
FAR 65 won the Kaiser prize 2 times
1905 = 5 bat
1912 = 5 bat

I have redone my Kaiser & King Prize display
so to show a couple of helmets front plates
as worn by Jager troops
Some of the Jager Prizes have the incorrect cloth backing .
and to display my small collection
of very rare Prussian and Saxon Machine Gun prizes View attachment 21414

Do we know why a few of the Jager badges have no date on the skull? I see one here on the far right.

Thanks, Lance

I can't remember if that one has a date or not ?
I have seen several with no date and I never understood why ?
I normally would not go for one without a date
If that one has no date , if was a "package deal "
when I got the collection
Steve

I've seen several Jager Kaiser Prizes without dates. Just last week there was one on offer in a US auction. Looked like a completely legit piece but without a date.

I don't understand why they exist.

I don't either
I wish that someone could fill us in on "why "
Steve

Thank you for your replies. I too hope that someone can explain this eventually as I did buy the one in the auction and am now awaiting its arrival. Was looking for my first KP and I bought that one as I assumed that Jagers were quite scarce. Won't buy another one without a date but won't need to as I already have one! ;)
