Some more photos including the inside of the spike where the shrapnel ball hit.

So Coert was kind enough to send me some shrapnel from Ypres and as mentioned in earlier posts the hole/dent in the spike is just the right size for this shrapnel from an 18 Pounder shell. So there is a very good chance that this is how the hole/dent was made.

Thanks again Coert!

Peter

I have to say it
The ball in the spike looks totally cool
I have a silver Wurt with a hole in the wappen almost the same size that I believe was repaired and reissued
The inside of the helmet looks almost new but original
If there is anything interest I will take a few pics

Thanks.

Yes that would be very interesting to see as well.

Not to get off topic, but this is interesting. This Ersatz steel helmet has shrapnel damage to the spike. The bottom of the spike has been penetrated, while the upper spike has been struck. Amazingly, the shrapnel is still in place, imbedded into the spike top.

Looks like the shrapnel on the Bavarian helmet was angled upward when it hit. Either a low burst or the helmet was on the ground. Ricochet? Also agree with Brian, rodents. However, I have a Baden M15 that is mint on the outside and all dried up and stiff inside.
