This one came to me yesterday.

IR 76 Hamburg, Officers Pickelhaube in the 1915 war time style with grey fitting under the spike and removable scales on 91 fittings. made from fiber with an ersatz sweatband of oilskin. 20211230_172811.jpg20211230_172830.jpg20211230_173405.jpg

Kinda ticked all the boxes for me so I thought why not !

cheers

Tony

I'm learning and seeing these pieces is really important and useful for me ....
Thanks and congratulations ... beautiful pickelhaube
..and forgive me if it's a silly question....how do you know that it belongs to IR 76 Hamburg?
Are there some stamps inside? or are there construction details that distinguish it?
Regards

Hi Giorgio, Great Question ! Its all to do with the cockade with this one.

Officers helmets were not stamped as they had to be bought privately and were not issued by the Regiment.

As you probably already know some states had different helmet plates ie Baden, Bavaria etc to distinguish them apart but some smaller states and in particular the Hanseatic ports adopted the Prussian Eagle plate. So they used cockades to distinguish them apart and show their heritage and traditions. I'll post some more pictures and do a show and tell of the IR76 cockade in another post.

Hope this helps.

cheers

It could be of interest if you'll show the cockade.

Ok here goes a show and tell of the 1915 "style" Officers Pickelhaube.

The concept was simple enough...stop looking like an Officer and you might not get shot so quick......or as the Tommies called it "clipped round the ear" or "clipped" slang for getting a head shot from a sniper.

So the idea was remove the spike to lower height and not be noticeable in the trench...have removable chin scales so a leather strap could be worn instead and cover the plate with material in field grey.

Here is a de constructed Helmet...........

It seems that we have here an officer JR76 cockade, with a small hole at the center, fixed on the helmet by the M91 side post, between the shell and the side post.

Here is another pattern, with the big hole to allow it to be mounted on the side post. It´s a named helmet worn by Karl Steinel, a Vizefeldwebel der Reserve / Offizierstellvertreter in the 8/RJR76, wounded September 1914, taken prisoner and then deceased in a french hospital.

Superb Philippe.

I have the larger centre version of the Lubeck cockade for both Officers and Other ranks but not one for Hamburg.
