M15 Prussian with Waterloo Bandeau

This helmet is one of two that I picked up recently. The helmet has obviously seen better days as far as "finish" goes. A good 50% + of the surface finish has flaked off unfortunately. There are no kokarden but there is a nice M15 chin strap in great condition. The leather is a bit stiff after 100 years but this can be addressed. The spike and spine are slightly rusted but again this can be carefully removed. Restoring missing finish will take some work but is not impossible. Some photos:

The helmet is marked size 57 1/2 cm which is a good size for any helmet.

With most of the black lacquer missing we can see the primer coat which was applied to the leather shell.

The liner is in excellent condition! However, we can see that typically the rear half of the shell has collapsed inward.

A nice close up of the Rare M15 Waterloo Bandeau wappen.

In my experience half sizes were rare in pickelhauben, although I have seen them before. What makes this helmet unique though, are the markings. Most M15's as stated before are not marked so it is very cool to have them on your helmet. The helmet is stamped 173 R (Regiment) on the rear visor. References tell us that this regiment did not have a bandeau wappen because it was not formed until 1897..... Ninth Lothringisches Inf. Regt. Nr. 173, Base: St Avold, 111. Batt. Metz XVI AK. So at first glance, having a Waterloo bandeau on this helmet seems "bogus"! :( However, the Army Korps marking on this helmet is stamped
X. AK . Many regiments with Napoleonic bandeau on their wappen come from this Korps. To be specific...Regts. 73, 74, 77, 78 and 164 were all part of X AK. So the question I would put to our European and more experienced collectors.....is there an explanation for this? Did R 173 have connections to Hanover? Did AK's provide helmets for other Korps?? The helmet is clearly stamped 1915 underneath the Regt stamp. Photos of the markings will be posted tomorrow. Merry Christmas to all! :)

Hi Brian,

I hope it turns out to be a legit Helmet. (y)

I'm looking forward to hearing the answers to your questions and hopefully they can erase your doubt.

On first look the wappen looks a little out of place with the condition of everything else on the helmet and an alarm bell quietly starts ringing in the distance but sadly this is the state of the Hobby and one can never be too careful.

Like all modern collectors a bit of detective work is always needed, and I wish you all the success with this one and a very Merry Christmas to you and yours. 🎅🎁

Here are the markings as promised:

173 R 1915. to our newer collectors, this is a true M15 not an earlier helmet which has been converted to grey steel fittings.

BAX 1915 .... the Army Korps

A nice large manufacturer stamp which is unusual...Maury & Co Mainz . We can also see the steel grommets which indicates a true M15. The leather wedges also look period and have not been moved for decades. Again for new collectors....look at the spike base pins, they have never been removed since manufacture. The black paint is untouched and the pins are totally flat against the disc. Because of the clear markings, the excellent prewar liner and size and condition of the helmet, I will repair the finish on this piece.

Brian,
I've already had the opportunity several times (about 10 times at least) to observe M15 helmets well regimented with JR173 stamp on the leftside of the neckguard and BA X on the rightside. Always only helmets dated 1915 or 1916. It would seem that the Metz clothing office of the XVI AK suffered a notable lack of equipment towards the end of 1914 (see for exemple my M95 Metz PB 16 helmet presented in a parallel post, which was quickly transferred to a hastily-formed new unit, the RJR236). From this, I think we can conclude that the XVI AK was helped in equipment by the X AK in 1915-16, especially the JR173. On the other hand, without exception, all the helmets I came across had classic Prussian plates. You'd have to look at your helmet to see the ghost left in the leather shell and if the banner is also part of this ghost or not...

Thank you John, I am in the US right now so the work will have to wait until I get home. I will also be following Wojtek's instructions on refinishing. 👍

Looks like a good acquisition. I suspect that the value of the Wappen and the original chinstrap alone would justify the cost of the piece.

Brian,
Another example, sold on ebay.fr, the twin brother of your helmet, but without Waterloo.

That is very cool Philippe! That helmet is a total twin to mine including the placement of all the ink stampings and manufacturer! Yes Steve, the wappen alone covers all of the cost of this helmet. :)
