Though my first focus when I began collecting Imperial was Pickelhauben, I quickly started adding uniforms, insignia, shoulder straps and epaulettes to the collection. That said, my very first purchase of a Pickelhaube was this Badisches Pionier-Bataillon Nr. 14 helmet in beautiful condition. As most of you can tell, this is a Vulkanfiber helmet made by Depeheg Patent. I prefer these due to their preservation and beauty. I love shiney objects -- like a crow.
Just yesterday, I added a pair of Hauptmann shoulder boards to the collection to go with this helmet. I love the Pionier underlay, with the beautiful black velvet and red. These are also in superb condition.
The Reservist Stein has been in the collection for a while now as that was added when I became focused on this unit. They all go together very well. I still lack a Schirmmutze and Waffenrock for this bataillon. So the search continues.
The unit was formed in 1850 and garrisoned in Kehl, on the Rhine river near Strasbourg.
Enjoy the photo. My thanks to Steve McFarland for offering these boards to me and also for directing me to the Pickelhaube when it was for sale some five years ago. I am in his debt.
