Helmet for sale at German auction

Hello Steve,

Stauffer always shows only 1 photo in the catalog and my experience with this auction house is that you really have to go and see for yourself for a correct assessment because there is often junk in there and unfortunately you can not rely on their description and a single photo..
Sometimes they have very nice items (gorgious Haubes of Wilhelm II von Württemberg, last time..) but often also many composite pieces...

That is why I dare not make a statement about this piece..

100% agree - this is definitely a "caveat emptor" sort of auction house. I've picked up some nice pieces, but also waded through a bunch of weird and/or questionable junk. That said, they are (in my experience) great with providing detail photos if requested, especially if you aren't asking for a crazy amount of them.

Correct, no problem for extra pics. In their catalogue this helmet is listed as possibly the one of the last reigning duke of Saxe-Meiningen. I found a few pictures where he wears the Prussian Generals Helm. [Prussian Garde Stern].

The crazing on the shell looks so uniform it almost looks like alligator skin. Very interesting looking.

I would have a hard time bidding on an expensive helmet without more photos.

all nice but don't forget that you pay an additional 20% with your bid, personally expensive auction or am I wrong

Francis
In that photo he is wearing (as a la suite) to the Garde Grenadier Regt 2
He also had uniforms of other regiments
